The Borchard and Maulhardt families were originally from Germany, immigrating in 1867 to California, and to Ventura County in 1871 after a series of misfortunes.Īfter success with barley and lima beans, the early farmers discovered that sugar beets grew well in the alkaline soil of the Oxnard Plain. “We also grew lima beans and we hope to renovate the thresher so we can thresh them at this site,” Maulhardt said.
